On Wednesday 10 June, 7.00pm to 8.00pm – In Conversation Live with Philippe Sands, author of the best-selling and multi award-winning “East West Street”, described as “mesmerising”, will be joining Professor Sir Simon Wessely to discuss his latest book, “The Ratline”, already labelled “exhilarating and gripping”, a story of love, lies and justice on the trail of the Nazi leader who got away, as well as his reflections on the current crisis, international law and justice, and what it is like to make friends with the children of war criminals.

Sands is Professor of Law and Director of the Centre on International Courts and Tribunals in the Faculty, and a key member of staff in the Centre for Law and the Environment. He is a regular commentator on the BBC and CNN and writes frequently for leading newspapers. He is invited to lecture around the world, and in recent years has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Toronto, the University of Melbourne and the Universite de Paris I (Sorbonne).

Sands is a co-Founder of FIELD (Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development), and established the programmes on Climate Change and Sustainable Development. He is a member of the Advisory Boards of the European Journal of International Law and Review of European Community and International Environmental Law (Blackwell Press).

Due to his experience in international courts and having been involved in many of the most important cases of recent years, including; Pinochet, Congo, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Iraq and Guantanamo. Philippe has written best-selling books pertaining to controversial legal matters in recent times such as; Lawless World (on the illegality of the Iraq war), Torture Team (on the embrace of torture by the Bush Administration), and East West Street (on the origins of crimes against humanity and genocide). East West Street won the 2016 Baillie Gifford Prize, the 2017 British Book Awards Non-Fiction Book of the Year, and the 2018 Prix Montaigne.

His latest book, The Ratline: Love, Lies and Justice on the Trail of a Nazi Fugitive, was recently published in April 2020 and is also available as a BBC podcast.
