COVID-19 Series: Cardiac and cardiovascular issues – Episode 28

Hypertension and pre-existing cardiac conditions are risk factors for higher morbidity from COVID-19. The reasons for this are not entirely clear, but there are theoretical risks that the inflammatory cascade could predispose towards rupture of atherosclerotic plaques in the coronary arteries and aggravate arrhythmias.

This webinar will focus on the advice that should be given to patients suffering from hypertension, atherosclerosis or cardiac failure, as well as the management of these conditions in the context of infection with the COVID-19 virus.

Our guests will be Professor Nik Patel, RSM Chairman of the Academic Board and Director of Cardiovascular Medicine, East Sussex Healthcare, Dr Sukhjinder Nijjer, RSM Cardiology Section President-elect and Consultant Cardiologist at Chelsea & Westminster NHS Foundation Trust, and Richard Schilling and Saidi Mohiddin, two Consultant Cardiologists at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London NHS Trust.

Professor Nikhil Patel is Chair of the RSM Academic Board. He is Deputy Chief of Medicine and Cardiovascular lead (Stroke, Diabetes and Cardiology) at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust. He is also the Head of Health England Kent, Surrey and Sussex School of Medicine.
