Dentist’s Ten Commandments

Here’s are a Dentist’s Ten Commandments from Dr Joe Oliver BDS LDSRCS:-

  1. Listening to a song or news item on the radio while brushing your teeth helps you do it for the recommended two minutes.
  2. You’ll miss 30 per cent of your tooth surfaces if you don’t floss. Waxed, flavoured floss slides between the teeth more easily and leaves a fresh taste.
  3. Keep your toothbrush germ-free by rinsing it in hot water and storing it where it can dry out.
  4. Carry a pack of sugar-free chewing gum in your handbag and chew after meals to protect against acid attacks.
  5. Choose a medium textured toothbrush with a small head. Soft brushes are too soft to clean properly and hard brushes can hurt the gums. Electric is better than manual.
  6. Whitening toothpastes don’t ‘whiten’ your teeth – they get teeth back to their natural colour. Most are fine but avoid abrasive ones for smokers.
  7. Regularly check the inside of your mouth in the mirror to see where your gums are inflamed and need special cleaning attention.
  8. Splayed bristles mean it’s time to change your toothbrush – usually every two to three months.
  9. If you’re nervous of the dentist’s, agree a ‘stop’ sign, such as raising your hand, before treatment starts.
  10. Many medicines are syrupy and laden with sugar. Try to choose sugar-free options and ask your GP to request the sugar-free variety on the prescription.
